Background of the Study
Economic diplomacy serves as a critical instrument for fostering regional integration by facilitating trade, investment, and policy harmonization among neighboring countries. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has been at the forefront of promoting regional integration in West Africa, and its initiatives have significant implications for economic development and political stability in Kano State (Xavier, 2023). This study examines how ECOWAS economic diplomacy initiatives, such as trade agreements, infrastructural projects, and regulatory harmonization, contribute to regional integration. It explores the negotiation processes, implementation strategies, and outcomes of these initiatives, evaluating their impact on cross-border trade, market access, and regional cooperation (Young, 2024). The research draws on policy documents, economic data, and stakeholder interviews to assess both the opportunities and challenges associated with ECOWAS initiatives. It also considers factors such as political commitment, institutional capacity, and external economic pressures that can influence the success of regional integration efforts (Zhang, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite robust ECOWAS initiatives, regional integration in Kano State faces challenges due to divergent national interests, regulatory inconsistencies, and infrastructural limitations (Xavier, 2023). Critics argue that while economic diplomacy has opened up opportunities for cross-border cooperation, the lack of effective implementation and coordination among member states hinders the full realization of integration benefits (Young, 2024). This study addresses whether current ECOWAS economic diplomacy initiatives are sufficient to promote meaningful regional integration in Kano State or if additional measures and reforms are needed to overcome these challenges (Zhang, 2025).

To evaluate the impact of ECOWAS initiatives on regional integration in Kano State.
To identify challenges in implementing economic diplomacy strategies.
To recommend measures for enhancing regional cooperation and integration.
Research questions

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the role of economic diplomacy in promoting regional integration through ECOWAS initiatives. The insights provided will help policymakers and regional stakeholders enhance cooperative efforts and overcome integration challenges, contributing to sustainable economic growth and political stability in West Africa (Xavier, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the assessment of ECOWAS economic diplomacy initiatives in Kano State and does not extend to other regional or global integration frameworks.
